Opting for sustainable consumption, a reflex at Calyon's
The central theme of the Sustainable Development week, sustainable consumption, has formed an integral part of Calyon's policy ever since 2007. Efforts made and the first results are quite promising. This is an opportunity to make an assessment of Calyon's action in favour of sustainable development in 2008 within its own consumption and within the scope of its activities and of its relations with clients.
Calyon reduces its ecological footprint
On 30th March a video will be shown in the Bank’s corridors and on its intranet site to remind employees of the very simple gestures in favour of sustainable consumption. On 31st March, a meeting with internal communication will give Bernard Michel, Head of Crédit Agricole Assurances, a Comex member and the groupwide coordinator of the Climate Principles the opportunity to make a presentation on this initiative.
The two events are within the frame of the 1st to 7th April Sustainable development weekProgramme of the Week for Sustainable Development at Crédit Agricole CIB's:
- Daily e.mail on good practice in printing,
- Introduction of the selective collection of waste in offices (at 9 Doumer and Triangle),
- Showing of an animated film on gestures in support of sustainable development,
- Ordering of recycled paper from a catalogue.
. That week, the Ministry for Sustainable Development encourages companies to organize awareness enhancement and information events on the theme of sustainable consumption. Adopting responsible consumption is acting daily, through one’s individual choices, in favour of sustainable development: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, fostering working conditions which respect men.
In 2008, Calyon endeavoured to reduce its environmental footprint through concrete action aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Energy consumption decreased 2.4% over the year at Head Office 9 Doumer, particularly through switching off automatically the lights, the use of energy saving bulbs and the reduced service time of electrical equipment (motor and hot water tank for toilets). 25% of all electricity consumed at HO (21% in the Greater Paris area) comes from renewable energy sources.
- Almost all the printing paper used bears the Forest Stewardship Council (FSCThe Forest Stewardship Council is an international organisation made up of representatives of environmental protection organisations, organisations that defend the rights of indigenous peoples, forest operators and lumber merchants.) label and comes from forests managed according to the Sustainable Development standards. The paper weight has been reduced to 75 grams from 80 generating an 18% reduction of wood, 14% of water, 23% of consumed energy and 6% of waste. At the same time, overall paper consumption has dropped 9% in 2008 relative to 2007 and 13% over three years. It adds up to 55.6 million sheets per year.
- Regarding waste, most computers at Calyon in Paris are dismantled to be recycled or sold for a peppercorn amount to associations by Ateliers du Bocage (a subsidiary of Emmaüs, a charity). Paper sorting in refuse sorting plants will be rounded out by a selective collection of paper at HO to improve the percentage of recycled material. Used batteries, empty ink cartridges and broken bulbs are collected and sorted to be recycled.
- Lastly, thinking about transport started in 2008 leading to a first set of measures. Less than 3-hour long professional trips are now by train and the car pooling exchange has now 615 enrolled. This action will be taken further in 2009 to build the Company Mobility Plan2009 phases of the Company Mobility Plan:
- January: collection of information on employees' journeys, business trips, mail and car parks,
- April: collection of employees' expectations through a questionnaire,
- End of June: setting objectives in terms of the reduction of emissions of CO2,
- H2: proposal of an action plan to the Executive Management,
- September: implementation of measures decided by Executive Management.
.
Assessment of Calyon's action within the scope of its activities and of its relations with clients
Mainstreamed factoring in of the stakes behind sustainable development
An internal directive now sets the principles for taking into account the environmental and social aspects of loans and investments at the various analysis and management phases of the transactions. Three specific training sessions on respectively the stakes of sustainable development, the Equator Principles and the Climate Principles are now available to the Bank’s personnel.
Equator Principles, assessment of projects
After using it for 5 years, Calyon has improved in 2008 its tool to assess the social and environmental impacts of projects. A total of 299 projects have been classified as of 31st December 2008 of which 65 during 2008:
- 15 were rated A o/w 1 in 2008
- 249 were rated B o/w 51 in 2008,
- and 35 were rated C o/w 13 in 2008,
31% of all assessed projects related to power plans, 34% to infrastructures, 15% natural resources, oil and gas.
Signature of the Principles for Responsible Investment
In September 2008, CA Cheuvreux was the first broker to sign the Principles for Responsible Investment under the ægis of UNO. They represent best practices regarding the consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESB) issues in investment choices.
Mobilisation against global warming
The fight against global warming is a major challenge for the society and one of the axis of the CSR practices of Crédit Agricole s.a Group. It is one of the five institutions which devised the Climate Principles on 2nd December 2008. Committed to their implementation, Calyon participated in their preparation and will continue its efforts in 2009 through devising a sectoral Corporate Social Responsibility policy regarding energy.
Finance and Sustainable Development Chair
The Chair went full speed ahead with its extension to the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique. 22 scientists and 15 PhD students are associated to the Chair. In this respect, 2008 was a particularly good year with highly promising research on models integrating sustainable development, 45 research items, 3 books were published and 9 symposiums were organized by the Chair or with its support.
Financing of renewable energy
Calyon continued in 2008 to finance renewable energy. The Project Finance business line committed itself as early as 1997 with the financing of the first windmill parks. Renewable energy now accounts for 15% of total commitments in project finance relative to power generation (and 18% by the number of transactions in view of their lower average unit amount).
Fabienne Raynaud, Project Manager for the Company Mobility Plan : "Calyon took steps in 2008 to reduce its direct ecological footprint in France. The Group performed a carbon audit for the Ile de France region. It reveals one particularly significant source of emissions: transportation. We are looking at this closely as part of our just-launched Company Mobility Plan."
