Raphael Doerling: "Above all my job needs strong communications skills"

Raphael Doerling, Associate in the International Banking team in New York, presents his experience in Crédit Agricole CIB both in Germany and in the United States.

What were your professional experiences prior to your current position?

I joined Crédit Agricole CIB in Frankfurt as a Relationship Officer in the Corporate Coverage team in October 2007. I used to work intensely with a Senior Banker and many of the Bank’s German multinational corporate clients. Then I came to New York in December 2009 as an Associate in the International Banking Team.

What are your responsibilities today?

I am responsible for the relationships to the American subsidiaries of the Bank’s German and Austrian clients. We are in direct relationships with the customer. Thus, we coordinate the activities of the Bank’s various business lines and elaborate cross border solutions for our worldwide core clients.

What are the significant achievements you would like to highlight?

During my time in the German Coverage team, I worked on several billion Euros transactions helping our clients to conduct acquisitions and major investments worldwide. Since I have joined the International Banking team in the United States, we have been able to further strengthen our collaboration with German and Austrian clients. We also managed to increase our support to American corporates in Germany and Austria by providing tailor-made solutions on both sides of the Atlantic. This involves cross-border structures as well as risk management tools and structured finance instruments.

What skills are required for your position?

Above all my job needs strong communications skills. This includes communications with both clients and colleagues in the United States as well as in the international network. Networking inside and outside the Bank is an integral part of my work. A good understanding of business and economic links is important too. Moreover, it is vital to catch on the Bank’s financial instruments and how to structure them in a way that supplies the best solutions to our clients. This is why this job requires a broad knowledge of financial analysis and modelling.

If you could tell someone one thing about Crédit Agricole CIB, what would it be?

Even though the work environment in corporate and investment banking tends to be very competitive, I have made very good friends within Crédit Agricole CIB. It is a great experience to work with some of the smartest people I have met in various parts of the world. I am sure that many of these relationships will last a life long.
