"My internship at Calyon enabled me to discover my future profession"

Interview with Vincent Berthillot, Credit Manager, Transaction and Commercial Banking.

A graduate of the EDHEC Business School in Lille last March, Vincent discusses his student experience and joining Calyon.

How did you discover the business world?

Business schools provide students with concrete training for entering the corporate world through forums, case studies, internships in France and abroad, as well as invitations by companies to learn about business lines and opportunities. This gave me a pretty good idea of what an employee’s daily life would be like.

I was particularly interested in the financial sector. During my final year, I did an internship at Calyon as an Assistant Credit Manager in the Transaction and Commercial Banking business line. A schoolmate who graduated a year ahead of me had done it and found it to be a good learning experience, and he recommended it to me. I then did a second internship in another bank in London, working in project finance.
These internships helped me to make my choices, namely to find a front office sales position in a leading corporate and investment bank.

During your internship, what struck you about Calyon?

At Calyon, interns receive close attention, including a welcome breakfast meeting with the presentation of a business line, such as Group Internal Audit, by its head. Calyon strives to inform interns of its various business lines and career opportunities. During my internship, I was able to receive training in several areas, whether directly connected or not to my business line. I discovered the career opportunities available in Transaction and Commercial Banking.

What is your current job and what do you like about Calyon?

In April, after graduating, I had an opportunity to rejoin the team I had worked with during my internship. After working as an Assistant Credit Manager, I became a Credit Manager.
Together with a Corporate Banker, I help to originate transactions by structuring them and managing the credit facilities granted. Our client portfolio consists of French CAC 40France's main stock market index. The CAC 40 is a capitalisation-weighted composed of the forty most heavily traded stocks that are considered to be most representative of the market. The level of the CAC 40 is used as an indicator of general trends in the stock market.
"CAC" stands for Cotation Assistée en Continue (continuous quotation of a stock from opening to close on the Paris Bourse), and the number "40" refers to the 40 stocks from the official list used for the sample.
companies, and I work with the unit responsible for the Industry, Engineering and Construction and Public Works sector.
This position has given me responsibilities from the start, as the opportunities are very substantial for our clients and for the Bank. Along with the sales aspect, I like the international side. Abroad, I coordinate the work among the subsidiaries of our clients and those of Calyon. I reconnected with a business I liked, working in a team of 15 people with their positive spirit and dynamic, which I find very motivating!
