Anna Huo: "I enjoy the challenges of structuring a deal that works"

Anna Huo, Manager in the Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Power division - Structured Finance in Australia, tells us more about her daily responsibilities.

What have been your professional experiences prior to your current position?

My first step into the corporate world started in 2005 with an offer to participate in Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s (CBA) summer internship program. This led to a part-time position during my final year at the University of New South Wales (Sydney) as a business analyst in the bank’s retail banking services division. Upon graduating with a double degree in finance and statistics, I completed a graduate year at CBA, rotating through its stock broking business, before becoming an analyst in its Project Finance team. I joined Crédit Agricole CIB in Australia in 2008.

Can you describe your main responsibilities?

I’m a Manager in the Project Finance team in Sydney. My main task is to provide support to Senior Bankers throughout each transaction. This includes:
  • preparing client pitches,
  • brainstorming deal structures,
  • conducting risk and return analysis, and
  • ensuring all internal processes and approvals are complete.

My team aims to provide clients with efficient and commercial debt solutions for their business needs. We also actively seek lead arranging, underwriting and advisory roles in the Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Power sector.

What is your sample work schedule?

Each day begins with sorting through emails and noting down a list of to-do items for the day. Throughout the day, the items are completed in order of urgency with time scheduled for meetings and conference calls. Working hours can fluctuate dramatically according to transaction flow, and tasks can range from reading through due diligence and legal materials to attending site visits across the country.

What skills are required for your position?

The most important skill requirements are attention to details and the ability to grasp concepts quickly, followed by a fundamental understanding of risk and good common sense. It’s also important to work well in a team, have clear communication skills, some persuasive ability and it never hurts to have a sense of humour.

What do you appreciate most in your work?

I’m lucky to be surrounded by highly motivated and intelligent individuals. I enjoy the challenges of structuring a deal that works and the feeling of accomplishment when a deal closes. By being involved in vital infrastructure and power projects in the community, I know in some way I am helping to improve the quality of life for many Australians.
