Nicolas Foucher: "Being a VIE is a unique opportunity to work with people of different cultures"

Nicolas won the Hong Kong VIE Grand Prize in the Banking/Finance category. He shares with us his experience in Hong Kong.

Why did you choose Crédit Agricole CIB for your VIE?

I was already working in Hong Kong before joining the Crédit Agricole group. It was there that I met my future manager, who told me about Crédit Agricole CIB's operations in Asia Pacific and the role of the Risk and Permanent Control Department. He saw my keen interest and encouraged me to apply for a VIE position. After the recruitment process, I joined the Asia Pacific Credit Risk Management team in Hong Kong for a 24-month assignment.

What are your main responsibilities?

We provide the credit risk reporting and analysis for the Asia Pacific region. My role first and foremost is to ensure the accuracy of the risk data we send to Paris.

I also make sure that the local teams monitor the credit risk of their entity every day. I'm also responsible for producing and analysing reports on our exposure and risk-weighted assets in Asia. These reports are critical to risk management. More recently, in the area of risks, I've been involved in preliminary studies for product and activity launches in Asia.

What have you gained from this experience abroad?

It's a unique opportunity to work with people of different cultures who don't always work the same way you do. It’s also a small-sized branch which makes for a lot of interaction between the different departments.

Why do you think you won the Hong Kong VIE Grand Prize?

I think the judging panel appreciated the consistency and tangibility of my VIE experience. I wanted to prove that it is possible to have an impact on your company's activity as a VIE. More generally, I think they must have enjoyed the humour and optimism of my report.

What do you have planned after your VIE?

My goal is to stay in Hong Kong after my VIE experience, ideally within Crédit Agricole CIB. The Asian region will continue to be a global growth driver in the years to come. As the biggest financial market in the region, Hong Kong is set to become even bigger on the international scene.

Crédit Agricole CIB is already being well established in the region, and I believe it has what it takes to participate in and benefit from this growth.
