Crédit Agricole CIB's history in Hungary

The first transaction in Hungary tracks back to 1874, when Crédit Lyonnais participated in the “Hungarian Loan” organized by Rothschild, with the aim to develop the recently united new capital, Budapest.

On occasion of the 1879 Great Flood in Szeged, Crédit Lyonnais dedicated its branches in France to collect donations for the sufferers.

During the first decade of the 20th Century, Crédit Lyonnais organized several consortia for the distribution of Hungarian bonds in France, among others, to the benefit of the city of Budapest.

Between the two World Wars, the activity in Hungary was focused on helping French retail investors to recover their pre-war investments.

Following the declaration of the new Republic of Hungary in 1989, the Group moved fast to establish a bank in the country. A representative office was opened already in January 1990, and upon government approval, a full banking subsidiary was created in July 1992.

Since October 2007, we operate as a branch of Crédit Agricole CIB, enabling our bank to directly rely on the strong credit rating, lending capacity and product range of our parent.
